Thanks to all the seniors for doing this service to all the aspriants. This will definitely do a world of good to us! :)
I am an Electronics Engineer (with ST Microelectronics, Noida) and have applied for Strategic Management. I am interested in this area as I believe this would help me to get into a position where I can formulate and affect changes for an organization.
My knowledge in this area is mostly though the material posted on the internet. Will the test grill us on concept of strategic management or will it be more like case studies etc.
Should we be expecting Quant questions this year as well?
What is the weightage for the test?
Is that a sort of elimination round?
Thanks once again for your help
regards
Vishal
Hi FPM current Students,
How is the program going in IIML?
How is Life @ IIML(FPM)? How are you enjoying it? Of course, I love to be a part of the alumni. I am just curious about the program and hence want to know about it.
Hello
Many thanks from all of us to the seniors! Thanks for doing this wonderful service.
I have a few queries about RAT:
1) Will this test be specific to our areas? i.e. different tests would be administered for different groups
2) What will be the pattern of the test? Will there be case studies?
3) Will there be quant-type questions also (like previous year)?
4) How will we be judged? Typically, what would be expected out of the candidates? Will this be type of a elimination round?
Looking forward to the reply
Thanks and regards
Vishal Gupta
Please give us the reply. We are waiting for that.
@Vishal...
Sorry for a delayed reply...
well...
Its not right to share every information considering confidentiality but based on our understanding, we can give some ideas about the queries you have asked...
RAT alone itself is not an elimination test, it goes along your interview performance and other criteria. As mentioned in earlier posts, the purpose of RAT, descriptive in nature (Essay type) is to check your awareness and ability to understand problem situations in your area. It may be a mix of generic concepts, covering different functions of the Management domain, and area specific conecepts as well. Of course, it may contain caselets too.
You are not expected to be a genius in your area, but you should have some basic knowledge of it. you should be clear about what your particular area of management is and what are the issues relevant to the area.
You may expect a little calculations also, that too depends on the area you have applied.
Your selection will be based on cumulative account after evaluation of your educational background, workex, Qualifying test score (CAT, GMAT etc...), RAT and interview; each component having some weightage.
Hope this is clear to you now...
Best Wishes!
Disclaimer: though this information is very much relevant, keep in mind, this blog is totally "unofficial" and informal.
Hi Seniors,
Thanks a lot for this initiative of yours... I have a few queries.. If you could throw some light on these, it will be great...
1. What are the future prospects of an FPM guy? (Other than acads!)
2. How easy is it to get into a corporate job? (In some consultancy?)
3. Is the stipend taxable?
I have a few more.. but if u can answer these, it will be great.. :)
Thanks in Advance.
NoeL
Dear Noel
First 2 questions are already answered in FAQs. please check it out in that section.
1. IIM - FPM Alumni are working in both domains - Acads and Industry and holding good positions in their respective companies.
2. There are many Industry jobs into research, analytics and consulting... Type of job one gets, depends on the candidate's background and profile.
Of course, the number of types of suitable jobs for FPM is lesser than that of MBA profile jobs, but so are the number of candidates too... if we count for premier institutes, number of PhDs in Management passing out every year is much much lesser than number of MBAs.
3. Stipend is not taxable
Feel free to post your further queries.
Best Wishes!
hi,
I am currently working with a leading IT company after completing my MBA from IBS mumbai and am a biomedical engineer. I have workex of 2 years in presales, in healthcare domain. as i have not done my acads from very reputed institutes, does that hamper my admission to the FPM ?
What CAT score should i eye for ? My area of interest are business strategy and consumer behaviour in marketing.
Thanks
Dhawal
Hello Dhawal,
It does not matter at all about your place of study. What matters is whether you have it in you the knowledge and the stamina to withstand the rigour the program demands.
Regarding the CAT score, the higher the better. But unlike PGP, here we depend on sectional cut-offs and it varies from area to area. You can read the FPM FAQs in the blog to get details about the selection process.
Best Wishes

WHAT S THE AVERAGE PACKAGE A STUDENT CAN GET BY JOINING FPM?
@amit
Though this si the question I have always avoided to answer as I feel but this should not be first thing one should know about the program- the package. FPM has lots of intangible gains over and above money.
anyways... This time I should answer this query too...
well... that depends on you, how much better you can grab. Its totally a subjective thing dependent on your background, kind of profile you seek in the job, type of industry and your performance.
Its not wise to give a figure like MBA jobs, where also the salaries vary from less than 10 lacs to arnd or more than a crore. THough in MBA we can provide a median or average salary in FPM its nt wise to calculate average as the number of candidates is pretty less.
But expectation of handsome amount cannot be denied.
Upto some extent you can get some idea about it from the kind of companies FPM alumni are working into.
Hope I could put some light on your doubts...
best wishes!
can anybody tell me what is the minimum GRE score required to get shortlisted in the fpm programmes...i have a score of 1230...maths-710 and verbal-520...is there any chance? my wrk-ex is 2 yrs with IT industry...
@Mithila
You have good chance of getting shortlist call but let me know which area you area applying to?
Hi..
I have 1.5 yrs work ex post PGDM (in HR and now OD)..., have a very strong inclination for management research..., my acads are not very strong enough though(mid 60s through UG, PG)..., how much of a significant difference would it make??? applying for the OB area....
Many Thanks,
Avinash
Hi!
Though past academic performance will surely give a candidate some edge over others but, despite not so high marks/CGPA, if you have sound understanding of your domain/academic background and if you can justify your candidature, 60%+ is decent enough to get you a call. but of course you will have to prove yourself in the written exam and the inteview too...
best wishes!
Hi,
I did my B.E then MBA from XIMB and presently working in a FMCG major or past two years . I was never that great in academics .I had prepared a case ( under process for publishing ) and written one article related to marketing( published in college magazine )
Yesterday I scored pathetic in CAT expecting only 80's percentile should I still apply for FPM ?
In cat form also I have filled only for FPM
@Manoj
TO be very honest getting a call at 80 percentile seems very difficult... but wait and watch till you get your score card, may be you get more than that. You may apply to IIM Lucknow after you get your score card as the last date is somewhere in Feb. check the deadlines for other IIMs also. and take your decision accordingly.
best wishes!
hi i am balaji
hi seniours thank you very much for this blog am balaji kumar... i did y B.E.-mechanical this year ......i am intersted in doing doctoral programme from iims.... i did well in quant and reasoning ... i will get 95-97 percentile in both the sections.... but i got -4 in verbal...... so is it feasible for me to get call letter .. if so what is next appilication programme ..... please answer my questions ,, plz
@Balaji!
How much percentile you expect in Verbal? Please type again. Is it -4 ??
hi thanks for your responce .... i got negative four in verbal... it is the score which i got .... and i guess i would not get more than 15 pecentile in verbal section ........
yes... to be frank a minimum decent cutoff has to be maintained in every section... its really not possible to get a call from any IIM... you should try again...

Hi Thank u very much for ur kind initiative... I m Rakesh from Kolkata.
Hi Sir /Madam, I am Rakesh Banerjee from Kolkata.I did my Graduation in Agriculture from Bidhan Chandra krishi Viswavidyalaya(BCKV) with 86.4% marks(it was 8 semester 4 year programme). Then I took CAT & scored 83 percentile & took Admission in Globsyn Business School, Kolkata(Not recognised ny AICTE).But Now I find this PGDM degree to be insufficient to reach my desired goal.I had more than 80% marks in both secondary & 10+2 level. I am doing my PGDM in Finance & going to finish in March & having more than 70% marks till now. As far as the knowledge of Finance is concerned I am not that viable.I have also done Licentiate on Life Insurance from Insurance Institute of India & taken 6 papers of Associateship from the same & planning to do ACII,London there after.could u please suggest me whether this FPM will be suitable for me? if so then in which sector? will I be eligible as I didnt do my post grad from a AICTE approved Institute but I have 4 years 8 semester Bachelor degree.
Hi,
I have applied for FPM with my GRE score of 1033. I have 5.6 yrs experience in teching UG and PG students of IGNOU. I am a MCA degree holder with 71.4% of marks. I have 2 questions.
1. What is the chances of my shortlisting?
2. How and what to write under research proposal given in the form?
I am pplying for two areas:
1. Information technology and systems
2. Human resource management
Waiting for quick and kind response
@Rakesh!
For the eligibility criteria, as yours is a special case, it would be good if you can call up FPM office of the respective IIM or send a mail to them mentioning your education and professional details. According to the criteria mentioned in the bulletins you do not qualify but as your basic degree is a 4 yrs course, I am not sure if they consider it. I hope at least for the FPM in Agri Business (offered by IIM-A) you must be eligible. But please check with the FPM office of the respective IIM. But to crack FPM interview you need to be academically sound. so if you are not good at your fundamentals, start learning now so that you can justify your knowledge and candidacy if you get a shorlist call.
best wishes!
@Varsha
chances of getting shortlisted seems good... though it also depends on your past academic records... let me know from where have u done ur MCA and whats ur basic qualification- I mean what is ur graduation into?
for informarion about what and how to write research proposal, please refer to the FAQ section of the this blog.
Best wishes!
Hi
It was a great relief to find such an informative blog for fpm programmes.I must congratulate you all 1st for this great initiative.
My question is no different from others.
I have been working in SAIL since the past couple of years and I intend to apply for OB and HR area.
I have a score of 640 in GMAT and have around 84% in class 10,94% in class 12 and 87 % in B.Tech.
I am very much interested in certain areas of OB and have written 2 research papers in the same.
I am apprehensive regarding my chances for fpm programme due to my score.
Can you please throw some light as to whether I should go ahead and apply or wait for next year?
@Swati!
Hi.
Thanks for the compliments. Though I am not very sure about the exact cutoffs through GMAT but, with that much score and above average academic performance, I guess you can get an interview call. No harm in applying this year too. Your GMAT score is valid for two years. Check the deadlines of all IIMs.
Best Wishes!
Thank You so much for your positive comments.I will definitely apply.Lets see what happens
I am B.E. Civil with 22 years of experience in Civil Engineering. I topped in Engineering from Jiwaji University in 1985 with 83.5 percent marks. I have done CFA from ICFAI University in 2007. With an intention of doing specialization in finance(FPM), I appeared in CAT 2008 in which I have secured 83.94 percentile. What are my chances of selection in FPM(Finance and Accounting) at IIML? Please guide.
Jitendra.
Hi,
Thank you very much for loads of info abt FPM.
I would like to know in detail about the RAT(what may be asked in it..etc) and also if I want to do FPM operation research what should be my core strenghts....my knowledge of statistics, neural nets & Fuzzy logic would be a plus or not.
Also i request you to please through some more light on difference between FPM and PGP(I read the diff in main section but if u could explain it by an example it would be better....actually i want to know what do the FPMs do in last two years...may be if u'll take OR as an example it will be very usefull)
Once again thank you very much for such a great work...info abt FPM on net is same as the no. of management faculties in India.....
Hello
I am a final year engineer with job offer from accenture. i wish to pursue the FPM program bur dont know much about it. can i get an overview about what the program demands and covers? what all possibilities exist after completion? I am a avg student with 71% in B.Tech.is the program such that many cant even complete it?
Plese dont ignore this i really want to know.
Hi
Thanks for the gr8 initiative.
I have done B.E from DCE with 69.7%. Where I participated in quite a few technical paper presentation competitions and also won some of them. Then I worked for one year at Alstom. Then I quited my job to open a web marketing company where we do online research and provide solutions to our clients. Now I want to learn the technicalities of marketing and do research on leveraging the power of internet marketing for businesses, so that i can have expertise in providing marketing(with focus on internet) solutions. I got 94.9 percentile in CAt-08.
I want to know Is the step of opening my company will hamper my candidature for FPM ??
@Jitendragunjan
Hi
Though your percentile seems little less but seeing your experience and academics I can expect an interview call for you. Why not take a chance. I mean have you applied for the FPM? If not then do it now.
Best Wishes!
@Prak
Hi
I will answer the queries one by one.
1. RAT- Let it open for this year. Every year the format might be different. For last year's format refer to the FAQ section only.
2. Core strengths for OR- You must be familiar with optimization basics, good analytical skills, good understanding of algebra and a good quantitative aptitude.
I would suggest not to jump into a domain just by name. DO sufficient research on net to know about it and how it suits your background and your goals.
3. Details of the structure of the program and what FPM student does is given on the institue websites. Just to give you a brief overview- FPMs go through several MBA and doctoral level course in the first two years and then last two years they focus on their thesis and research. For example, one might be working on developing an optimization model or an algorithm for a real life business problem which shows an improvement over the existing methods/models.
Let me know if you have any specific query.
Best Wishes!
@btycoon
Hi
Your query is not clear to me? Can you be more specific and clear.
Have you gone through the institute websites and this blog to learn information about the program?
feel free to revert back
Best Wishes!
@Daac Saab!
Hi!
No. It will certainly not. Institutes lke IIMs promote entrepreneurial skills. It might be an advantage to you. Present it and the best possible and positive way.
Best Wishes!
Thank you for answering my query. I was waiting for your reply and now I will apply.
Hi,
Thanks for this enlightening FAQ write-up. If I am not too late to ask,my profile is
1. B.Tech Comp (CGPA-7.14 ) from NIT, Jaipur.
2. 2 years work ex from TCS
3. Running a small financial consultancy and marketing firm for the past 7 months(family business)
4. CAT - 93.66 (QA: 96 DI 96.5 VA: 63.8)
Could you please throw some light on:
a) Will my score in verbal section pose a problem for admission into FPM?
b) I am interested in strategic management. Will my finance & marketing background raise serious questions while considering my application?
Expecting your reply,
Thanks in advance.
Gokul.
Sir as i said i am in my final year of engineering with job offer from multiple good co.s. i want to work in the industry for few years and then pursue the FPM course but i dont have any clue what this course is all about. i hv read the website but what i want to know is probably your own personal experience about the course.what is a day like of a fellow student?
this is bcoz i dont know whether i fit in the mould of a fellow or not. also i hv an avg academics of >70% throughout.and is work ex an advantage coz i heard that IT co. workex do not value much?
also can one get into consultancy after it or is it rare.
i know i hv lot of questions but that is bcoz i feel i want to do it but cannot get a source that can help me in counselling whether its d right choice for a person like me.
if u can give me a rough idea of exactly what kind of people fit in the course of fpm.
and thanks a lot for your help. its really difficult to know about fpm's.
regards
Hi Seniors, this is a great initiative on you part. :)
I am a BDS graduate(2007) with 2 years full time work experience in a reputed hospital. I wrote CAT 2008 this year and my scores are:
QA- 75 percentile
DI- 67 percentile
VA- 99 percentile
OA- 97.77 percentile
My background is-
Class X- 90.4%
Class XII- 81.8%
BDS- 61.4%
I want to pursue FPM in the fields of HRM/D or Health Care management under Public Policy/Public Systems.
I would like to know:
1. If Health Care Systems/Policy is a subject under which FPM can be pursued.
2. If my low CAT score sectional percentiles in QA and DI will be a hindrance for me in getting a call.
Thanks and regards,
Swati
Thanks for the reply ...I have another query, is it safe to apply for 2 courses in FPM? how can I defend the question --give reason for 2 applications?..please answer this ASAP
Hi, I'd like to ask about the profile of FPM candidates.
I'm a Btech (ECE) completed grad in 2008 and worked for 4 months with Tata Tele.
Do I stand a chance in FPM.
@Eshwar
Hi
As I can see you have shown good performance in your academics and CAT percentile is decent except VA. I am not sure about your skill level but if the score is just out of bad luck, you might get a chance to appear for the next round, as the screening for FPM shortlist is done after considering everything and not just the CAT score. In the later stages of the selection process, you will be re-checked for your verbal skills.
Best Wishes!
@swati
Hi
1)For Q1 you will have to check from the respective IIM's FPM office to which you want to apply. In the institute's FPM appication form also they mention the areas offered.
2)For the area and IIM you are applying into minimum requirement of the sectionwise percentile/score might differ. You must try.
Best Wishes!
@daac sab
You can apply for two areas. IF they are giving that option, whats the harm?
Reason- you will have to find out yourself, what answer suits you best. I would not opt to answer this question here as this may be the case with many candidates; each one should be ready with his/her own convincing answer.
Best Wishes!
@Hope-seller
I should ask a question here- Why not? If you clear the basic eligibility conditions and qualify one of the tests as mentioned in the brochure, you can.
Best Wishes!
@btycoon
Hi
Personal experiences might differ from person to person. A day in FPM's life- I guess an article on this blog by Surya describes that. We will soon post one more article about FPMs. Wait and watch.
Workex is definitely an advantage but not a necessary condition if mentioned in the eligibility criteria.
Some of the traits recommended for people who pursue FPM- perseverance, determination, inquisitiveness, sound academic knowledge, good research aptitude, analytical skills etc...
Best Wishes!
Thanks 4 ur prev reply.
I'm int 4 making a career as an academician. In the application form I've been asked to propose a research thesis but since I've never worked on one previously I don't have much idea about it. I need your sggst for the same.
Thanks so much for the answer :)
@ Hopeseller
Glad to know that you visualize yourself as an academecian.
A research proposal is NOT a concrete plan of research and certainly NO ONE expects you to give a full fledged research idea at the admission stage.
Its all about investigating your questioning attitude and your ability to hunt for an answer.
My suggestion...
1- First define your area.
2- Google your area and read and RE-read a few write ups from the net
3- Question the above readings
In a nutshell present a critique of the readings and at the same time propose a few questions. It requires common sense :)
Hope am clear.
Best wishes!
Surya
Hi all,
Some of you have sent your queries via e-mail. We are redirecting those queries as well as their response on this thread so that all of you can access it.
~Ritu
From Sachin Jadhav:
--Is there need to fix research area before Interview?
--Is there need of research publication?
--What kind of technical preparation needed to crack the interview?
Your answers Sachin:
--yes, you need to fix broad research area as the same must have been asked in the application form too – like marketing, IT, Operations etc.
You don’t need to fix or commit any narrowed down research area, but if you could give some idea about it to the panel based on you interests or past experience – it will be a plus.
--I didn’t get your question. For getting into FPM program, a research publication or any research activity is not expected, but having its obviously an advantage.
If this question is regarding the FPM process, then yes. We need to have some research publication in good reputed journals by the end of program.
--I don’t want to sound like a counsellor here, but your technical preparation should be in sync with what you are selling to interviewers. E.g. if you are going for IT, be ready for questions on technical subjects (networking, operating system, database etc. ), on your m.tech dissertation and your proposed research idea.
Hi seniors,
Words will prove petite to express gratitude for this wonderful initiative. I've gained ample knowledge about FPM through the posts.
I had applied for FPM in HRM; got to know that I've been short listed for the interview, slated for 16-17 April, 2009.
I'm working as SAP consultant in an MNC at Bangalore, with 16 months of job experience. I would love to get your views on 2 small (apparently very big) questions of mine:
1. As mentioned in my research proposal too, I'm interested in 'Performance management' as my research topic. It would be great if you can make my road a little smooth by enlightening me with the type of area specific questions, which could be asked.
2. Is RAT compulsory for all?
I also got some information that RAT is only for the ppl. who apply directly, and not with the reference of CAT scores. How far is this true?
Wish you a happy time; thanks in advance. :-)
Hi Hemang;
Congrats.
1- If you have mentioned about Performance Management in research proposal well you must know how to elucidate the key performance indicators (KPI) in any job. The identification of the same is the current hot area of research for they keep on changing according to contexts, organizations and people.
2- As far as we know RAT is compulsory. However it must be mentioned explicitly in the call letter given to you.
Best wishes and welcome to IIM-Lucknow
Surya
hello, Any one of you please let me know about the areas covered in the RAT?
What type of questions it will have?
I will highly appreciate your support.
Hi Varsha;
Congrats to you too.
RAT has been designed to test your analytical writing abilities. You would be provided with a small case and would be expected to analyse the case and answer two questions in a hour. The test is just to test your ability to read a given passage, analyse it and put down your thoughts in a structured manner.
However you must know that RAT's module keeps on changing every year. Hence do not be surprised if you are surprised ! :)
Best wishes
Surya
Thanks alot Mr. Surya for your response. I am ready for every surprises. thanks again
Hi,
I was at the recent IIM L FPM interview. I would like to ask you that what are the packages people normally get after FPM. Being an assistant prof @ IIM I believe is not payable enough as I saw @ IIM L's faculty positions website. It is 12K-18K.
Please throw some light on this.
hi,
i m an B.tech(ECE)having work experience of 5 years in DRDO as scientist and in EIL 1+ years as sr.engineer n i m keenly interested to pursue career in academics but one hurdle with me, +2 marks (state board) only 56 percentage while my 10th n b.tech marks are 70 and 72 percentage.will it effect in selection for FPM provided i score good enough in cat ?
Hi Seniors,
This is a great initiative, which enlightens future researchers of our country. I have some queries related to FPM inspite of going thru websites of concerned IIMs, am pursuing my Master of Public Health form Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai, FPM from IIM is really gives advantage to many budding researchers, this caught my interest recently when I was going thru news paper announcement, but earlier I had thought there will be opportuities only for Management students but was wrong, there are opportunity even for health students aws well, my area of interest is Health care Management, and Public system and Health Policy these areas are only offered by IIMB and IIMA, am planning to take JRF on dec 09, as our course is entirely on research oriented as we have 6 credit worth research in 4 th sem. I would like to know
1. what is min. score in JRF should be?
2.My scores in UG and secondary school are very poor(its 50+)will I be considered with these scores?
As IIMA and IIMB are highly competetive institutes.
anticipating your reply
Praveen.
Hi,
i would like to thank the seniors for this type of service for aspirants like me.
i am a software engineer and now will persue my mba from nagpur university in marketing and i want to do phd also i marketin related subject, so can u guide me about what to do,i.e how to get into primere institute for my phd,and tell me that how to prepare from now to get good premeir institute.
thank you.
Hi,
I would like to know if GRE Scores are accepted and if so, whats the minimum required? I know that there is no hard and fast rule. But approximately, how much should be the minimum to expect a call?
A brief view of my profile: Topper in academics throughout. From school to college. Working in a startup IT company now. Just a month since i joined. I have 1240 gre score. I would like to re-take the gre if mine is too bad.
Kindly help me..
Hi Aravinth,
GRE scores are accepted for admission to the FPM program. A score of 1200 is decent enough to expect a call.
All the best.
In comparision to the cat percentiles of 85 and 90 with which ppl apply to FPM, a score of 1200 in GRE looks very less. Isn't it? Any kinda assurance that 1200 holds good?
I'm curious to know abt it because i am afraid if my GRe will ruin my chances of a call..If that happens, i will have to wait for one more yr to apply again.. Any clarification on this would be appreciated.
Hi Aravinth,
1- A CAT percentile of 85-90% is pretty less for application to an FPM program at IIML. Over the years I have been stationed, the minimum cut off for a call is 95-98%.
2- If you are unsure about the acceptability of your GRE score, please do retake the test or any other test as you may feel appropriate. Closing all loop holes as far as possible is also a significant aspect of management and there is no ceiling on improvement. :)
All the best once again...
Surya
Well..Thanks for ur reply mate.
Got a few more queries..
1. I will take my GRE again probably so that i don't want to risk with that. Apart from that my academics also stands good so that i guess i need to concentrate on preparing the research proposal stuff which i need to submit alongside the application.
Can u throw some light on how to go abt it? I mean, how to get kick started on it. With a UG in CSE and without much exp in industry, i am not able to identify potential research topics.
Can u suggest any systematic approach which i should be following?
Hi Aravinth,
We had been asked about the same previously by other aspirants too and I copy paste the response given to one of them called as 'Hopeseller'. May be you shall find it useful.
"@ Hopeseller

Hi buddy,
Got ur reply..But that seems to be too generic. For me, my interest is around OB & HRM. I do like the field of HRM and so an inclination towards it. NOthing more. For someone like me, especially with no background in these areas, how do i get started?
Anything which u would suggest reading? I know that google is always there. But it throws a touch too many articles. As my interest is on line with ur specialization, could u suggest something to start up with?
Sorry if my question sounds weird.
Regards,
Aravinth..
Also, got one more question. How much does a consistent academic record help?
I have 94 in Class 10 and 95 in Class 12 and 9.69/10 in B.Tech. Will it work out in favour? I mean, will it help out to negotiate the drawbacks if any thru my exam scores like GRE where i have a mere 1240?
Hi Aravinth,
1- A consistent good academic record like yours is a huge plus point when you apply. As far as its ability to cover up the performance in the qualifying examination, am unable to comment.
2- Now that I have a knowledge on your interest (i.e. OB/HRM), I think my replies shall be more specific. Some of the current research interest in HRM is in Performance Apprisal, Spirituality at Work, Employee Innovation, and the ever green domain of Leadership research. For a fresher like you preparing to face an interview, Leadership shall suffice. Just have a look at the different styles of leadership and think a bit about them critically like the applicability of the same in different national contexts. For e.g. Would Gandhian Leadership Style seen success in US? (The ans. is YES! as it was replicated by Martin Luther King). But then what are the implications and the extent of generalization applicable to make it a theory.
PS: Even I had no background in OB/HRM. Only fuelled by interest! So relax.
Best wishes
SP
Good to hear that my academic record will work out in favour of me. At least in some stage of my application processing.
Will stick to ur suggestions reg OB & HRM. Is there any book which u would suggest me to read which would give a basic idea abt HRM and possibly abt OB?
Hi Surya,
Got a query. Can u tell some roles taken by OB & HRD grads post completion of their courses in Corporates? It will help freshers like me to get a better understanding of what we will do sometime down..

Have such candidates been selected in the past? &
What are my chances if I sit for RAT without CAT,GATE,GRE,GMAT score?

Moreover sir I have also been recommended as an officer in IndianNavy by 12SSB bangalore.

Hello Mr Sandeep,
Clearing one of the exams i.e. CAT, GATE, CSIR (JRF), GMAT, GRE is mandatory. It is the first step and short-listed candidates based on the scores of the above exams (any one) shall be invited to take the RAT in the campus.
Best wishes
Surya
A big thanks to all of you seniors and bloggers who have already cleared most of my doubts thru this blog-site even without asking.
I am pretty much confused about which specialization to chose from, so i will just brief my profile first so that you can recommend me some!
Well, I did my graduation from IIT Guwahati in the year 2007 securing a 6.81 CGPA. I have a 83 %age in my Secondary and a 77%age in my HS. I know that I dont have much of a bright academics but i do possess a certain bent for research. While in college, i presented a research paper (i was working on a certain project i was interested in under the then HoD of my deptt), in a national conference named CHEMCON and also have a publication in International Journal of Thermal Sciences to my credit. i also did a 2 months long internship in China.
After graduating i joined this company called NRL (a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum) and was posted in the Marketing sector. As its a small organization so i got the opportunity to explore in many fields. I wont say that i have acquired an indepth knowledge by now in all of them but a superficially wide base of knowledge. I was involved in Sales, Foreign Trade, Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Marketing Ops. Besides all these, I have also been involved in training MBA summer interns who undertook summer training in my company.
It will be very helpful if you please tell me about my chances of getting a call, and which specialization to chose as it will matter a lot while filling the applications. One more thing to add from my boss, who says i have an analytical bent of mind as i am pretty good in Maths.
Hi Joy,
Answers to your queries as follows:
1- Chances of getting a call: Depends on CAT/GRE/GMAT/CSIR/GATE score also. It is not dependent on single criterion and must be seen as an agglomeration of many criteria - CAT score, RAT score, technical knowledge, and of course past academic record.
2- Specialization to choose: Never choose one with an ambition to get a call. Choose for you are interested (may sound cliched!), for once in you shall have to sustain your interest for 4 long years (thats long! and diff from engg.!. Moreover the last two years you are on your own fighting a daily battle to get your thesis on track and time. Hence interest matters.
3- Miscellaneous: You require Maths in everything here irrespective of the area you choose. My humble opinion is take up marketing since you have exposure in the field; more importantly your profile speaks that; so most likely to attract the attention of a Mark Prof. (in accordance to your wishes of getting a call). And yes, area must not matter since we do interdisciplinary research too.
Best wishes
Surya
Hi Soumiya,
Post FPM, certainly it will be below prestige to to take up an HR Manager job (like an MBA) in any of the corporates (we do look at prestige in choosing jobs! research says that). In corporates, yes we can go for consultancy. FPM is designed to make you a consultant across disciplines. Hence no one mentions - FPM in OB/HR or FPM - in Marketing - in his/her CV. Though we specialize we are expected to generalize and the onus is on the candidate to enrich his skills.
Specifically very few venture to corporates post FPM and I am part of the first batch in OB/HRM area at IIM-L. So no empirical eveidence of an alumnus taking up a plush job post his doctorate to satisfy your curiosity. But opportuniies DO EXIST.
Best wishes

Thanks a lot Surya Sir for ur valuable comments. I was actually interested in Marketing but thought that my profile suits more with the Operations Management. So I was a li'l confused earlier, and hence posted this doubt.
As for now I would fill up the application forms and wait for the CAT results.
Thanks again and will keep u posted abt further developments cum doubts if any :)

Hi
I am glad i accidently read your blog and have already gathered a lot of information. Few queries though:
1) i have not read about RAT any where on the website .. is it a part of the process ? Also the information mentioned on the site is not updated with dates ( it has 2008 dates)
2) I am an MBA from SIBM, Batch 02( Simbiosis Institute of Business Management) with specialisation in Advertising and Communication.I have a total work ex of 6 yrs in sales and marketing function where i have worked for companies like Radio Mirchi , ICICI Bank and Airtel. My query is - can i look at avoiding course work for the first year as i already have an MBA ?
Thanks , regards Payal Kapoor
Hi Payal,
1- RAT is a part of the process as of now till communicated otherwise. However it is an internal process and differs significantly from IIM to IIM in test content, test cut off and test dimensions. Some IIMs may not opt to conduct a RAT and some who had conducted last year may opt to bypass it this year. Its organic. Thanks for pointing out the updation part. Shall inform the concerned authorities.
2- Yes you have a choice to avoid the first year course work. However as your MBA is from another Institute, you may have to write a challenge exam. I do not know the content of it since none of us have ever opted for it. You may consult the area Prof after your selection and be advised of the needful.

Hi!
I am a btech comp sci grad from IGIT. I have 74.4% in my B.tech, 70.6 in 12th and 91.4% in 10th. Are the scores too low to consider FPM in IIMs? I have done some research in image processing and have done my summer internship at NIC and DRDO. I am also a writer with awards and publications in national magazines and newspapers. I am considering applying in information systems and marketing. Do I stand a chance?
Hi Maxxie,
As far as your grades go, you do have a good chance. Do apply and lets hope you get through the qualifying exams(CAT/RAT)successfully.

Hi
I am a Software Engineer, presently
working with INDIAN RAILWAYS.I am keen to pursue FPM in Finance from IIM-L. I have done hopefylly good with CAT 2009.Now, i want to be prepared for interview. Please help me--what kind of research material, I should study?
I always wanted to get into Research, but had no guidance.
Then this blog helped me a lot.
Thanks for your help
Hi
I am a software engineer Btech in IT from USIT , Delhi.
I passed my engineering with 75% marks , 12th with 76.7 % marks and 10th with 83.6% marks.
I have given CAT this year and am quite hopeful for a good score.
I have a deep inclination towards an academic career and am planning to apply to the IIMs this year for FPM programmes.
I have seen the profile of students in FPM and in front of those profiles mine looks quite weak.
Do i stand a chance to get selected into the IIMs for this course.
How do i present myself to the faculty and show them my urge of joining this course.
Please help me regarding this....
Regards
Akhilesh
Hi Amit...
Please find below the answer to your query as answered by Ms. Sonia, a first year scholar in the Finance area:
"You don't really need to prepare any research material for the
interview. You can prepare some basic finance fundamentals and be
thourough with the questions that could be posed to you related to your
job experience. For the finance part you could use any financial
management book e.g. I.M. Pandey, Prasanna Chandra, etc."
Hope the answer satiates you.
Regards
Surya
Hi Akhil,
Everyone out there has an equal chance on getting through if:
a) There is a "decent" CAT score (decent is in quotes for it is viewed from the perspective of IIMs)
b) There is an interest in academics
c) There is a reasonably good academic record to back up your "interest" in academics.
In my opinion, you do have a good academic record. To be honest I failed to trace the relative superiority of my academic record in compared to yours, as mentioned by you. (I do not know about others!)
Hence hope for a good CAT score and on getting a call be honest to yourself by working hard to back up your "interest" and communicate the same to the Profs.
Hope it clarifies.
Best wishes

Hi
Can I apply to IIML FPM on the basis of GATE-2008 score only, I scored 99.1 percentile, or CAT score is mandatory? I am interested in Decision Sciences. Although I go through IIML website but under the section "Admission->Selection Process", the language sounds confusing and standard papers required for applying isn't clear.
Thanks,

@Nisha
For the coming year Nisha, you can identify your area of interest in marketing field and can get more familiar with the subject, the problems and the latest trends involved. This much focus on your area of interest will be highly appreciated.
Nidhi Hi I want to know about the admission process for FPM through direct interview.

Kindly read through the entire admission process that is mentioned in the blog.
The process is non-negotiable and hence there is no admission to FPM through direct interview.

hi, i am a serving army col and due for retirement next year. i have done MPM in yr 2006 from pune university in first class. i am interested in undertaking FPM at IIM lucknow. pl advise me.thanks.
hi,
thanks for such an informative post .
I have a few queries..
I am currently wrkng in a software cmpny(6 mnths ) got bare 70 odd aggragte in my b.tech (IT) ,but have cnsistent 90 90 in 10th 12th .
Training in DMRC .I papaer presentataion at DCE .
I actuaaly want to go for FPM in fin. and pursue Teaching as a career ,but my poin is do i have a chance of getting admission in terms of my previous background and
of rel. to the field i want to specialise in ?
Additionaly should it be beter if i apply for FPM in IS ?
kindly reply ,it would of utmost assisitance .
Hi "My Story",
Previous educational background is no bar for pursuing a doctorate in any specialization. Most of us possess dissimilar backgrounds in relation to the fields of specializations embraced by us currently.
Having mentioned that, it becomes obviously clear that it is irrelevant to which area you apply to. What matters is your aptitude which gets reflected in your SOP which you have to write.
So know your aptitude.
Best wishes
Surya
Hi 'surya' :
thanx for a quick reply ,since i wasn't expecting it .
Nw, dats the tougher part .
Knowing well i haven't ever had fin or accounting .
NO relevant wrk-ex...hw can i write an SOP fr dat.
its as simple i feel IT isn't fr me .
I want fin. investments , equty ...bt how to make an SOP out of it .
Rite nw evn i have no idea of the field in which i want my research .
.How to convince them about it ?
Just do some googling and you can have some basic idea about Finance. Better still (if you are bold) write to the Professors to have an idea about current financial research trends.
They shall not have much expectations during the time of interview. So do not panic. Just have some knowledge so that you can present a positive picture about yourself.
Surya
Hi,
This section is extremely beneficial and thanks a lot for this. I want to do a FPM in finance and give the CAT in 2010 for the same. I have an average academic background and experience, which I have given below. Please advise me if with this background, I can do a FPM. Since I have to start my CAT preparations, an early response will be very helpful.
My educational background:
---CA with above 50% aggregate.
---ICWA with above 50% aggregate.
---A first class B.Com
92% in 12th std and 89% in 10th std.
I have around 3 years of post qualification experience in finance and audit in top MNCs. Also do advise me if for CA/CWA professionals, one's proficiency to do FPM is assessed based on the number of attempts one has given to clear such exams.(in the sense that a first attempt cracker of CA has an edge over a second/third attempt ones.)Is it required that one should be rank holder to a do FPM. Is my qualification and scores sufficient to do FPM. Shall I consider preparing for CAT 2010.
you are eligible candidate saru and if you feel you have interest in research, just go for it. No counseling intended here!
Hi
I just gave GRE and got a score of 1420 (780 Quant & 640 Verbal). I am a B.Tech in Mech Emgineering from Lucknow currently pursuing my three year LLB course in Intellectual Property and Corporate Laws at IIT-Kharagpur's Law School. I am interested to do FPM in Strategic Management or Finance or Economics. I have a very average academic record but I am interested in research. What are my chances ?
I completed BE from NIT Trichy in 1997 with 75%. I am completing PGSEM program from IIMB by Nov. I have a CGPA of 3.62/4 thus far, and am assuming it doesnt get severely worse over the next 2 quarters. I have 13 years work-exp in IT industry in the middle management operations roles and 7 years Onsite experience in Customer Management roles.
I am interested in applying for FPM at IIMB or IIMA for joining in 2011. What are my chances of getting into Operations or Marketing area ?
For IIMB the FPM office clarified that I dont need to take CAT again because of the PGSEM degree. Do I need to take CAT again for applying for IIMA ?. Do you now ?.
Hi
Thanks for the informative posts. I have a somewhat weird combination. Would appreciate if one of you could guide me through.
X CBSE 94.8%
XII CBSE 92.2%
BE Computers AIT, Pune; Pune University 59.5% Aggregate [On the degree certificate, I have a First Class]
Work experience : 5 yrs ( 1 - Infosys ; 4 - Amdocs)
I have taken a break from work since Oct 2009 for preparing for Civil Services with optionals - Public Administration and Psychology.
Now, I wish to pursue FPM in Public Policy or Public Systems. For, my interest lies in the government functioning & policy formulation. I don't intend to go back to IT.
Issues of major concern:
1. My percentage
2. Seemingly abrupt change from IT industry to public sector.
Would be grateful if you could guide me on my chances.
Regards
Yashu
@ Yashu Rastogi
Hi, Public Policy FPM is available only in IIM-A,B & C and not in L.
Hi
I am an IT engineer completed my B.E in year 2008 with an aggregate of 58.34%. I have been working for a company as a Project In-charge from past 2 years , and my work consist of handling man power & interacting with the cloents. My queries are:~
1)Am i eligible for the FPM program?
2)If yes , then would it be better to pursue it in Operation Management?
Hi Surya, hope you can help.
I am interested in joining this FPM course and am interested in the area of Capital markets. My academic record is ordinary percentage-wise but should be decent percentile-wise since our university didn't give much marks in those days.
10th (WB board): 80.33%
12th (WB board): 71.5%
B.Tech (Calcutta University): 64.76%
PGCPM (1 yr program from IIM,K) 66%
10 years of work exp and the latest one as a business analyst in a division of Standard & Poor's.
What are my chances? What percentile is needed to get an interview call (asking since I don't think I can practice enough for CAT; may be I can practice for 2 months for 2 hours a day)
Awaiting your response.
Thanks!
Anirudh
@Achintya - Knowledge of Law is a great plus in the field iof management.
@அயனாவரம் கஜாமணி - About the PG degrees from IIMs, every IIM accepts PGP students without CAT score, but for other PG programs of IIM - there are different criteria. Kindly contact the respective IIM for the same.
@Yashu and Prasoon - There is strict rule of 60% aggregate for B.Tech or BE degree OR equivalent grade points. Yashu, I will suggest you to contact respective IIMs to get the final word on this.
Its alright to take a career change from IT to public policy or any other area in general - as long as you can convince your interest and direction in that field to the interviewers.
Kindly apply as there is no harm in doing so.

Dear Surya
Firstly i Thank you for replying back ....... :-D
i am Sorry for not providing information
My GATE score : 730 (in 2007) (Which is old)
Also i have worked in content management domain for 2 years
Do i have a chance in getting shortlisted ???
Looking forward to the reply
Thanks and regards
Shwethadri
Dear Shwetadri,
The GATE score is old may not be valid.
Incidentally GATE is valid only for two years.
So with this score you are not eligible to apply for FPM.
Any other qualifying exams?

Surya
Hi there!
I have applied for the FPM programmeat IIM Lucknowin the following areas
1)Operations
2) HR
Ihave two years of work exp. in the oil sector .I am a Chemical Engineer.
Ihave applied to the FPM porgramme with a GRE score of 1260 .(maths:770 ;Verbal:490 )
I have some queries:
1)Could you let me know my chances of getting a call.
2)What is the pattern of RAT.?Are all applicants required to sit for the same?
3)What type of questions are expected in the interview.?
Hi Kamalika,
I believe you have a strong chance to get a call.
I shall be unable to guide you for Operations, however here is my take on HRM.
1- Sitting for RAT is cumpolsory.
2- You may go through the blog in detail for info/guidlines regarding RAT
3- The HR interview shall see you answering questions on "why choose HR?" and "how is such a qualification benefit you?" Moreover there may be questions on some general motivation and leadership theories that you may glance from Wikipedia.
Best wishes
Surya
Hi
I want to ask what is the weightage given to standard test score e.g. GRE, in relation to the RAT score ?
Is RAT compulsory for all areas or are there some areas which consider only the standard test scores ?
Hi,
Can anyone let me know the expected date for the shortlist for FPM program?
Thank You
hello,
can u plz tell me, around what kind of a %-ile in CAT can assure a call 4 interview?
Hi,
I have appeared for some of the marketing phd programs application process and am pretty confident in making in at least one.
Just curious, how to prepare for the program? Any recommended books like statistics, Caluclus etc that you recommend which every student should read before starting PHD ?
Is calculus knowledge really required.
Thanks
Hari
Hi Hari,
Kudos to your confidence.
The knowledge of calculus is not necessary while statistics is a necessity.
However all requisite knowledge shall be provided to you in first two years of the programme.
Wishing you luck
Sincerely
Surya
Hi
If one completes FPM from IIM, can one use the Dr. or Doctor title as Traditional Ph.Ds do?
I am thinking of doing the FPM (Industry) from IIM Indore. My above question was to weigh that between doing a) an expensive 1 year MBA b) do a part-time MBA from say Symbiosis c) do an MBA form a not-so-formidable institute (e.g., IGNOU) + FPM (Industry)
MBA is not a pre-requisite to pursue an FPM later.
However post graduate degree is a pre-requisite.
Regards
SPP
Thanks Surya....
For FPM(Industry)-IIM Indore, I saw that PG is not a pre-requiste.... I have 10+ years of experience in IT industry...Hopefully that should take me through along with other credentials in my bio.
While I agree that IIM MBAs give the exposure and learning is great, but within an industry/ corporate - one cant deny that IIM diplomas or credentials have a brand value tagged to them, which help one advance in their career.
In that context, if I skip an MBA or PG and take this route, will it serve good?
In other words, will people in the corporate world realize the importance of IIM Fellow tag vis-a-vis a PGDM tag. (or if a lesser University's PhD for that matter?)
I need help in making this decision. (The FPM Ind. is priced at @ Rs.5 lakh as of now.)
Hi
This is a very good initiative of yours to help out guys preparing for FPM. Thanks alot and keep up the good work :):)!!
About myself, I am a Btech(Production) grad from Anna Univ with 7.6 CGPA and I am working in an Automotive OEM for th past 4 yrs. My GRE score is 1220(500 Verbal, 720 Quants). My marks in XII is 95% and Xth is 88%. What are my prospects of getting into FPM in IIMs in general.Should I write RAT as far as my understanding goes it is mandatory only for IIM B in addition to GRE, GMAT, CAT exams. Thanks in advance. :)
Hi All,
I'm planning to apply for the FPM for finance program this year. My profile is as follows:
1.10th- 85.5%
2.12th-86%
3.B.Tech (IT)-71% (Uttar Pradesh Technical University)
4.Long Distance MDP (1 yr Duration)-from IIM Calcutta (General Management+Finance(major))
5.Work Experience -3.5yrs in IT industry and 0.5 yrs in Research firm total 4 years.
Can you please suggest my chances of clearing the interview?---Manu
Hi,
i sincerely thank you for creating this informative blog.
my background goes as follows -
10th - 78%
12- 87%
grad in Economics from Delhi University - 1st division(67%)
Post grad in economics from Delhi School of economics - !st division(60%)
26 months of experience in Finance field, working for a Hedge fund as a Risk Senior Analyst
Can you help with the following questions -
1) roughly what is the minimum percentile that i should aim for in cat this time? Also how balanced should the sectional cutoffs be?
2) is it mandatory to give RAT along with CAT paper that i will be writing?
3) since GRE is relatively simpler should i prefer it over CAT in which i believe i am not so good!
i am interested in FPM - Finance & also Agri business.
Please let me know if you need any more details .
Many thanks!!!!
Hello Priya,
Thanks for your appreciation.
1- You must aim for a minimum of 95% overall and a quantitative sectional cut off 95-98%. Moreover it is advised that you must not go below 90% in any of the sections.
2- It is mandatory to take the RAT examination, however RAT is not to be taken alongside CAT. It is to be taken in the IIM campus post your interview call.
3. Yeah you can take GRE examination. We have students in the programme who have entered the same based on their GRE score.
Best wishes
Surya
Thanks a lot Surya for such an expeditious reply!
If i go for GRE route then do i have to apply for FPM separately? As in rtnw i have applied for FPM via CAT form what is the other way by which i can apply for FPM? Also what range of score in GRE is considered good for FPM?
Dear Prachi,
For FPM programme you have to write the FPM office requesting an application form by paying the requisite amount of fees (Rs 500/- to Rs 700/- depending upon the IIM).
There you have to mention the qualifying examination score you would like furnish (GRE/CAT/JRF/GMAT)
For GRE, a score of 1200 shall provide you a good chance of getting a call.
Best wishes
Surya

Dear Rama,
Don't you think this topic is too specific?
As a doctoral scholar you enroll in an area or department and gradually boil down to a topic. Your topic comes under the area of Operations Management.
However, if you still insist, you can write to the professors of the above area (their ids. are in website).

Great platform to educate people about FPM..an innovative IIM initiative...Thank you to mam Ritu for exposing me to this wonder ful magnificent blog....Got all my answers......
Hi,
Kindly go through my profile given below and help me with my queries following it.
I have just completed my B.Tech in Computer Science with an aggregate of 65%. I am placed in iGATE Patni, awaiting joining (No job-ex). I secured 72% and 75% in high school and intermediate respectively.
I appeared for CAT last year and scored an aggregate of 95.62 (69-QA,91.75-LRDI,98.75-VA). Also, I have taken CAT2011 this year and expect a good percentile.
Queries:
1. Is my current profile (without CAT2011 score) sufficient to get me through?
2. I am opting for HRM and Strategic Management in IIM-L. How should I go about it?
3. If I get almost the same score in CAT2011, which one should i quote(considering the fact that CAT2011 has 2 sections only)?
Thanks in advance
Regards,
Adish Agarwal
Hi Adish,
Glad to know about your "uncontrollable attraction" towards the FPM Programme.
Below are the answers to your queries:
1. Very high chances for you to get a call. However regarding converting the same to an offer for admission, I cannot say. It depends on the RAT & interview.
2. Just opt. However be sure about your priorities. It may happen that you may not be called for interview by the area you indicate as your second choice, if they get a sizable and "uncontrollably attracted" crowd.
3. The recent is always more authentic.
Best wishes
Surya
Thanks a lot for the answer.
You have made it a lot easier for me... :)
Hi, Thanks to all the seniors for running this blog to provide all needed info on FPM, which is rare to find elsewhere.
I am an aspirant for FPM of IIMs. I wish to know the following details:
Each IIM can be sent 2 or 3 applications, one for each area of specialisation. The forms are in PDF format and can not be edited.
My question is:
1. Do IIMs accept MS-Word form of the application in the same format as the application?
2. I have scored 85% in 10th, 73% in 12th, 64% in graduation: can I be selected for FPM inspite of my not-so-good results in academics?
Waiting for an early reply on the matter.
Thanks once again,
Regards,
Samudra Sen
Hi Samudra,
1. I do not know about MS Word application. However, logically I believe it is impossible to apply through the above format for an application demands a signature of the candidate. Hence hard copy applications are primarily possible, unless stated otherwise.
2. Getting a call depends upon the area you apply for and your relative competitiveness with respect to other applicants.
Best wishes
Surya
Thanks for the quick reply sir.
Sir, I meant, whether the PDF application is to be hand-written or a hard copy of MS-Word format of the application with printed/typed answers would suffice.
Please clarify.
Thanks once again.
hi i have given my gre and scored 1330( 780 quants and 550 verbal) wat are my chances of getting here with this? and one more query i had given gre on 14th june 2011 and i am in final year now .. so is the job experience necessary and if yes by the time i gain two years of job experince will i be able to apply with the same score as above?
Hello Rasika,
With a GRE score of 1330, you have a very good chance of getting a call.
Job experience is not mandatory.
However the most recent GRE score is always preferred during selections. You are advised to clarify on this point from the respective FPM offices of the IIMs.
Regards
Surya

I have a question on eligibility criteria. The site says "Candidates who have already obtained a two-year PGDM from any of the IIMs with a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale are exempted from this requirement, and can apply directly through the prescribed Application Form. " I have done Executive PGP from IIMK. Its a two year course and approved by AMBA as well. Do I also get this exemption? I need this information so that i would know whether to prepare for CAT or not. Unfortunately, all the efforts to contact IIML FPM (phone and emails) did not work for me. (NO one picks the phone and no one replies to mails :-))
Dear Anubhav Mishra,
Two years Executive PGP, must be sufficient criteria, for there are students who are already enrolled in the programme, through the above criteria. However you still need to re-confirm from the FPM office.
Regards
Surya
Dear Surya,
Thanks a lot for the reply. However as I mentioned earlier, my all attempts to contact FPM office have failed. Please provide some ideas on how can I get this info? Do you know any of your colleague or FPM colleague who is working in IIM Lucknow who can answer this? The problem for me is that if EPGP is not considered I have to start preparing for CAT and being a working executive, you can understand that time is very short :-). Any help / pointers are highly appreciated.
Hi surya sir,
I am nishant,I have done my B-tech in CSE from Icfai university, in year 2011, Currently I am working in as a software eng at mindfire solution from last 13 month, I have written this year gate examination but I didn't get good score, that's why I am planning to take GRE held in month of Nov 2012 so that I could apply in 2013 for FPM. I am completely confused about GRE my source of confusion is : whether for FPM IIM requires GRE General test (verbal + resioning + non-verbal) test score or GRE Subject Score I mean GRE Subject Test (For Computer science)...If I write GRE Subject test in coputer science then will my score card of GRE will valid for applying in FPM...I would appriciate your comment and clarification for my doubut...Thanks in advance.
Hi surya,
Just stumbelled across this blog. First of all thanks for this informative blog of yours. Almost all my querries are already answered apart from few. I need to know my suitablity for FPM program. A brief of my profile
1.Xth score: 88.67, XIIth score : 63.4
2.Gap of 3 yrs: was prepearing for IITs. Managed to crack pre every time but could not crack the nut.
3.Pursued B.Tech in Agri. Engg from "not so well known institute". Scored 8.7 out of 10 (CGPA).
4.Got job offers in farm machinery division (Mahindra, John Derre, Escorts) but declined as i desperatly wanted to change my stream as i realised later on that this is not my primary intrest area and to make a career in this domain.
5.I have computers as elective subject in Xth and XIIth. So i decided to pursue MBA in IT as major and OR as minor ( as i always remained good in maths) from IIIT Allahabad. CGPA - 7.2
CAT Score of 88.67 percentile in 2008.
6. Joined IT MNC and had 2+ yrs work experience in Information Security Domain(Much into Compliance with std. ISO 27001 rather technical aspect).
I just need a opinion from you that what chances i stand for FPM as far as academics is concerned. Though by reading the blog i know now that academics is not the lone criteria, also RAT and interview matters. Also my research intrest lies with "Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery". Will I be allowed to carry my research in this area?
Hi
I have a query regarding FPM, I have cleared JRF and want to pursue a fellowship programme at IIMs. I am confused which IIM is best for research in finance and strategy. and what is the actual time in which one can complete the FPM?
Looking forward for your reply
Hi,
First of all I would like to thank you for maintaining such a wonderful blogpost for FPM candidates. I am applying for the first time for FPM and I do not know much about as to what steps can I take such that my position is strengthened. For a brief I would like to mention my profile:
CAT 2012 91 percentile QA 71 VA 97
Grads- RV College of Engg. Biotech 8.89 cgpa
12th 79.6 pc
10th 78.3
Work-Ex- Senior Research Analyst in a startup consulting company in Chennai in the Pharma division. 2 years
With average extra curriculars.
What areas should we focus when we apply to FPM programs?
Shall my lower quant score affect my prospects if i apply for decision sciences or quantitative methods. This was one bad performance since advanced engineering mathematics was my elective in the final semester and i scored a S grade. i mean to say that i have interest in quantitative methods and i want to pursure that.
ON what basis do they shortlist the students
